Pine Box single review by allgigs.co.uk

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

An enigmatic debut from Newcastle new comers, Is Shepherd, jingly indie guitar’s lending themselves to a slightly poppy vibe. Is Shepherd are like a Bon Iver, it’s very atmospheric.

My first impression from the single is how good a singer Ben Trenerry is. He leads from the front and seems to be able to write a decent tune, the lyrics are energetic and poignant. I also like the underlying sound of the double bass. It’s unusual yet familiar.

Top marks for the interesting arty video, which accompanies the track. It was shot in wintry woodland with images of the band flicking back and forth from the studio where the trio play out the single. It’s well filmed and photographed, and works well with the music.

They have a very loyal local live following and Tom Robinson keeps championing them on his 6Music show. I’ve tracked down a bit more of their music and admit that the other stuff like, ‘Forever More’ and ‘Waitress’ offer a lot more to me. They have a bit more clout, as ‘Pine Box’ is a little light but very polished and in obtrusive.

It’s an excellent first single.

Single of the Month – The Crack Magazine

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

Pine Box – Is Shepherd: First single from this Newcastle-based band and it’s a rousing chunk of swampy indie/rock that instantly commands your attention. It’s propelled by rumbling drum beats which also help fill out their surging sound which is an utter joy. And there’s a supreme confidence at work here from a band who already sound incredibly well honed and primed for action. Go seek: www.isshepherd.com DP

Review – Manifesto Magazine (Print edition)

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

‘Songs for Sons’ is the newest addition to the Is Shepherd family, in which they’ve given birth to six tracks that sway between pretty folk melodies to foot-stomping gritty rock. Though-provoking and thoroughly enjoyable. 3/5
